Safe Sleep Guide
The Basics of Safe Sleep: What You Need to Know
Always Place Baby on Their Back to Sleep:
Placing your baby on their back to sleep significantly reduces the risk of SIDS. Always place them on their back in their crib or bassinet, both for naps and overnight sleep.
Firm, Flat Sleep Surface:
Make sure your baby sleeps on a firm mattress with a tight-fitting sheet. Soft surfaces such as soft mattresses, pillows, and blankets can increase the risk of suffocation.
Room Sharing, Not Bed Sharing:
For the first six months, it’s recommended that your baby sleep in the same room as you, but not in the same bed. A crib or bassinet next to your bed is ideal.
Creating a Safe Sleep Environment
Eliminate Loose Bedding and Soft Items:
Keep your baby’s crib or bassinet free of blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, and bumper pads. Instead, dress your baby in safe sleep clothing like a sleep sack or wearable blanket to keep them warm.
Keep Baby's Sleep Area Clear:
The only things that should be in your baby’s crib are the mattress, fitted sheet, and your baby.
Avoid Overheating:
Make sure your baby isn’t too warm. Dress them in light, breathable layers and maintain a comfortable room temperature—ideally between 68-72°F (20-22°C)
The Benefits of Using a Sleep Sack
What Is a Sleep Sack?
A sleep sack is a wearable blanket designed to keep babies cozy while eliminating the risk of loose blankets. It ensures your baby is warm and safe without the dangers of suffocation or overheating.
Why Choose a Bird + Bear Sleep Sack?
Our sleep sacks are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton and are pediatrician-informed to provide optimal comfort and safety for your baby. They’re breathable, soft, and ideal for maintaining a safe sleep environment for your little one.
Benefits of Sleep Sacks:
- Reduces the risk of suffocation from loose bedding
- Helps maintain a consistent body temperature
- Ideal for babies who are rolling or wriggling out of swaddles
- Easy for parents to use with zippers for simple nighttime diaper changes
Transitioning from Swaddle to Sleep Sack
When to Transition:
Once your baby shows signs of rolling over (around 3-4 months), it’s time to transition from swaddling to a sleep sack. This allows your baby to move freely while still being securely wrapped.
How to Transition:
Start by using a sleep sack with the arms free. This provides your baby with comfort and security while promoting safe sleep.
Common Sleep Questions:
Q: How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold?
A: Feel the back of your baby’s neck or tummy to gauge their temperature. If they’re sweating or their chest feels hot to the touch, remove a layer of clothing. If they’re cool or their skin feels cold, add another layer.
Q: Can I use a blanket in the crib once my baby is older?
A: It’s best to keep blankets out of the crib until your baby is at least 12 months old. Instead, use a sleep sack or wearable blanket that’s designed for safe sleep.
Q: What should I do if my baby resists sleep sacks?
A: Start using sleep sacks during daytime naps to help your baby get used to the feel of it. Over time, they’ll become accustomed to wearing it at night.

Stop Swaddling:
- When your baby starts rolling over independently, it’s no longer safe to keep them swaddled.
- When your baby regularly breaks free from the swaddle, they may be ready for more mobility.
- When your baby shows signs of increased alertness and movement during sleep, a sleep sack provides safe comfort without restricting their arms.
